Summer 2025

Western Athletics is back again this summer to provide a unique summer camp opportunity to youth in the Gunnison Valley! This state-licensed camp will take place on the Western Colorado University campus and is specially designed for children ages 5-12.  Junior Mountaineers Camp (JMC) combines athletics & physical activities with STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) to create a summer full of adventures and learning. Each week of camp will have a different theme that the various STEAM activities are based around in addition to the regularly scheduled weekly activities.

JMC PROGRAM INFO

    •    Monday - Library Visit / Char Mar Park

    •    Tuesday - STEAM Lab & Rock Climbing at Western Fieldhouse

    •    Wednesday - Water Wednesdays (Swimming at Rec Center, rope swing at Western's pool, sprinklers & slip n slide fun)

    •      Thursday - STEAM Lab & Wheels (bikes, scooters, rollerblades, etc)

    •      Friday - Field Trip Fridays

  • Each will of camp will have one or two STEAM Labs. These labs allow campers to learn more about the weekly camp theme from community experts and/or visit various science departments on campus for a hands-on activity with Western / CU Boulder professors.

  • Every Friday of JMC, the campers will have a morning field trip. Field trips help diversify the off-campus explorations throughout the summer and often are a highlight of the week!

  • Is your child attending GWSD Summer Experience? Or, do you only need half day care? During the weeks of Summer Experience, Junior Mountaineers will have a weekly option from 12-5:30pm Mondays-Thursday + a full day on Fridays. This option is only available for the weeks of June 9, 16, 23 and July 7, 14, 21.

  • A daily drop in option will be available two weeks prior to the start of a camp if there are spots available for the week.

  • Provides an opportunity for youth ages 13-17 who are too old to be campers and too young to be Camp Instructors to develop leadership and teaching skills in a fun, inclusive environment, while being a positive role model for the Junior Mountaineer campers. CITs will be involved with the K-1st grade classroom and will observe and work alongside JMC Instructors to help lead activities, assist campers with projects, read books, and more! CITs will gain valuable leadership experience, learn teaching and classroom management skills, assist with risk management, and participate in the weekly field trips, swimming, rock climbing, and other specialty activities. CITs are not camp employees, but participants who will be learning skills throughout the session, taking on more responsibility, and contributing in meaningful ways.

  • Junior Mountaineers has CCCAP camp openings to assist low-income working families with childcare expenses. Children must be under the age of 13 and are required to be U.S. citizens or legal resident aliens. Families receiving assistance are expected to pay a parent fee to the Junior Mountaineers at the first of each month. This fee is from 7 to 14 percent of the household's gross income, plus a small increase for each additional child. For more details about the CCCAP program and to apply, please visit the Gunnison County Child Care Assistance website.

Please note, application and approval into the CCCAP program does NOT reserve a camp spot for your child; camp registration is the responsibility of the parent/guardian. Please contact the JMC Camp Director to enroll your child into Junior Mountaineers for the week/s of your choice.
